Title:
George W. Smith Residence, Oak Park, Illinois, Floor Plan 1896
(1896 - S.045).
Description: Floor plan for the George W. Smith
Residence, published in
The
Architectural Review, June, 1900.
Although plans did not survive for the George W. Smith
Residence, it is generally accepted that Wright used plans
designed for the Charles Roberts Ridgeland
Development, 1896, an unrealized project. Plans do exist
in the Archives for the Ridgeland Development, and Wright did
design a number of homes, but in scouring the archives, the
George Smith Residence has a few similarities, but nothing as
conclusive as can be said for the Goodrich Residence which is
clearly one of the homes designed for Ridgeland.
There are many similarities to the Ridgeland Development.
Steeply pitched, double-sloped roofs, shingle siding,
diamond-shaped leaded glass, broad, overhanging eaves, hidden
entrance, to name a few. The Smith House is a variation of many
plans, but not one in particular.
A clue that ties the Smith Residence to the Ridgeland plans can
be found in The Architectural Review, June 1900. On the lower
left side of page 66, there are three postage size floor plans,
each measuring approximately .75" x .75", for the Ridgeland
Development. The description reads: “At the bottom are the germ
plans for a block of low cost houses for C. E. Roberts, Esq.”
The third drawing is an almost perfect match for the floor plan
of the Smith House, even down to the built-in seating in the
dining room. So even though plans have not survived, we can be
certain that, like the Goodrich House, plans for the Smith House
originated with the Roberts Ridgeland Development. Note: Due to
the small size of the published images, we enhanced the images
to pull as much detail as possible. See

George W. Smith Residence, Oak Park, Illinois, 2022 (1896 -
S.045).
Description: Beautiful recreation of the George
W. Smith Residence as it originally appeared in 1898. “When news
broke on Thursday, December 15, 2022, that the 1898 George Smith
House in Oak Park, Illinois, had been listed for sale,
Conservancy executive director Barbara Gordon immediately
reached out to listing agent, Catherine Cannon, and the house
was then included on our Wright on the Market. Within days of it
being listed, Barbara, Conservancy preservation programs manager
John Waters and Architectural Advisory Committee member Patrick
Mahoney, AIA, met with the realtor and family to tour the house
and discuss its future. While familiar with the simple, bold
exterior forms of the house, the Conservancy team found inside
spaces and details that equaled the expectations raised by the
exterior... John Waters created a digital model to give some
idea of what the house may have looked like when first built...”

GEORGE W. SMITH RESIDENCE (2019) |

|
George W. Smith Residence,
Oak Park, Illinois 2019 (1896 - S.045). Set of 69 exterior
photographs of the George W. Smith Residence. Designed in
1896 by Frank Lloyd Wright, and built in 1898. George Smith
was a buyer for Marshall Fields. By 1900, he had already
worked for the firm for over 30 years. He was also President
of the Illinois Commercial Men’s Association.
There are no drawings of the George Smith Residence in the
Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, and it appears none have

for the floor plan of
the Smith House, even down to the built-in seating in the
dining room. So even though plans have not survived, we can
be certain that, like the Goodrich House, plans for the
Smith House originated with the Roberts Ridgeland
Development.
The floor plan for the living space (minus the front porch)
is L-shaped. The front porch extends forward past the front
elevation of the house. The front porch is enclosed, and was
in the 1930s-1940s when Gilman Lane photographed the house.
The side porch is attached to the South (right) side of the
house, and the dining room extends out past the East
elevation (back) of the house. Cedar shingles completely
cover the exterior of the house. Windows are diamond-shaped
leaded glass. The roof line is flared, and the base of the
walls are canted like the Goodrich Residence, Oak Park
(1896), the Heurtley Cottage, Michigan (1898) and the Foster
Cottage, Chicago (1900). Two sides of the side porch are
secluded by a prairie styled balustrade screen, similar in
design to the Foster Cottage. The side facing the front of
the house is more stylized.

during a visit to Chicago. Our intent is to record the
details that create the totality of the design, creating a
complete picture, as-well-as the present condition of the
homes. In an effort to expedite adding these photographs to
this website, we have dispensed with a description for each
photograph. Set of 69 exterior photographs of the George W.

GEORGE W. SMITH RESIDENCE (2022/1898) |
|
|
|
George W. Smith Residence, Oak
Park, Illinois, 2022/1898 (1896 - S.045). Beautiful
recreation of the George W. Smith Residence as it originally
appeared in 1898. “When news broke on Thursday, December 15,
2022, that the 1898 George Smith House in Oak Park,
Illinois, had been listed for sale, Conservancy executive
director Barbara Gordon immediately reached out to listing
agent, Catherine Cannon, and the house was then included on
our Wright on the Market. Within days of it being listed,
Barbara, Conservancy preservation programs manager John
Waters and Architectural Advisory Committee member Patrick
Mahoney, AIA, met with the realtor and family to tour the
house and discuss its future. While familiar with the
simple, bold exterior forms of the house, the Conservancy
team found inside spaces and details that equaled the
expectations raised by the exterior... John Waters created a
digital model to give some idea of what the house may have
looked like when first built...” A five minute video can be
found on YouTube. Courtesy of John Waters and the Frank
Lloyd Wright Conservancy. (ST#2022.19.0623) |
